Whatsapp doesn't give you that analytics in an easy to view format, but it does give you the tools to view them yourself. <p>For small businesses when starting out, its super important to stay lean and validate your hypothesis as quickly as possible. This is only possible if you are churning out ideas and concepts quickly, and putting them in front of the user and gauging their response.</p>
<p>This calls for a light weight frontend and backend layer. While there are tons of technologies out there for fast frontend development (like Nextjs, React, Svelte etc.), recently people have started realizing the value of having a simple drag and drop widget like dashboard builders like <a href="https://www.appsmith.com/">Appsmith</a>, <a href="https://retool.com/">Retool</a>, <a href="https://bubble.io/">Bubble</a> and <a href="https://www.tooljet.com/">Tooljet</a>.</p>

<p>We recently comparared multiple dashboarding tools, and we decided to go ahead with Appsmith. Some of the deciding factors were:</p>

  <li>Appsmith is open source (hence trustworthy)</li>
  <li>Appsmith can be easily self hosted</li>
</ol>
<h2>Self hosting</h2>
<p>
  It was actually pretty easy to deploy a docker instance of Appsmith locally, build a dashboard with metrics, tables and charts with data coming from backend apis, and show a demo to customers within a day.
  Imagine if we had tried to build this in Nextjs ourselves, we'd have taken a couple of days just to finalize the designs.

<p>One of the biggest benefits of existing widgets is that you dont have to design the UI, its kind of comes pre-existing. It also gives you a good way of putting together a design in a matter of minutes, and see for yourself how it looks.</p>

<p>Since Appsmith is open source, worst case if it comes to it, you can just fix the bugs yourself and deploy. Also, most dashboarding tools have a user based pricing, which means if your team size or your customer's team size is more than 5 people, you end up paying quite a lot of money. Self hosting Appsmith is also super easy.</p>
<p>While this may not be what Appsmith had in mind, but lets be thankful to the wonderful piece of technology they have created. And we're happy to contribute back .</p>
<h2>Widgets</h2>
<p>Here are some widgets we found super useful:</p>
<ul>
  <li><strong>Left bar navigation</strong> for multiple pages within the same app. This makes it easy to navigate between pages without having to build a custom component yourself.</li>
  <li><strong>Dropdowns</strong> for filtering are super easy</li>
  <li><strong>Tables</strong> are super easy. For dummy data, configuring columns are a little painful, but if your data comes from a datasource (API, Database ...), it works out of the box very well. We hooked up our JSON api to tables, and it just worked.</li>
  <li><strong>Tabs</strong> works really well, its super easy to setup multiple tabbed content without requiring complex javascripts</li>
  <li><strong>Charts</strong> work out of the box. While the options are limited, but I found them super easy to setup and get a gist of whats happening</li>
  <li><strong>Export and import</strong> of dashboards works really well</li>
  <li>Very easy to <strong>add users</strong> to apps</li>
  <li>Great set of <strong>data source integrations</strong>. It was super easy to start with Google sheets to get a preview of what our dashboard could look like, and then move it to an API</li>
</ul>
<h3>Limitations of Appsmith</h3>
<p>While Appsmith is a great tool, there are some limitation we came across:</p>
<ul>
  <li>The dashboard isn't responsive (mobile layout)</li>
  <li>Current selected row JS doesn't work well in tables</li>
  <li>Pie charts and line charts need more config options</li>
</ul>
<p>But overall I would rate Appsmith above any other dashboarding tools because of the design philosophy and the <strong>open source</strong> approach they have taken. Open source adds a lot of trust in the mission statement of the product.</p>

Appsmith for building pretty dashboards


<h3>Why</h3>
<p>
  Whatsapp is amazing in the way it's super easy to use. From our parents to 10 year olds, everyone's on Whatsapp. It's end to end encrypted messaging also assures people that chats are private and cannot be read by any third party.
  And yet its missing even the most basic analytics like number of users, number of posts, who posts frequently etc.

  It's a pain to see random forwards / spam in a group that you have carefully curated and built. It's super important to act on it asap.

A bot that could identify potentially harmful posts and alert you ? A bot that could delete very high probability spam posts ?

  Not so convenient anymore huh.

Observability for Whatsapp groups


<p>These days there's hardly anyone not on Whatsapp, from business professionals to households. Every household also has a family group on Whatsapp where folks keep sharing photos / videos of events that happen.</p>

  After talking to users, we've come to the realization that media backup is still a major pain. The core issue is that Whatsapp &#x26; Google photos don't work well together. You can either backup all your Whatsapp media to Google photos, or not backup anything at all.
  The problem is, users <strong>don't</strong> want to backup the <strong>random junk</strong> they receive on certain groups. But they do want a backup of the media shared on the family groups ??

<h3>Step 3. Put the folder url in the SuperGroup dashboard</h3>

  Go to the integrations tab, and enter the url of the folder you just created under <strong>Google drive</strong> and click the <strong>Add</strong> button.
  You can pause the sync if in case you choose to.

  And yet its difficult to search over voice messages, or analyse the sentiment programatically.

Transcribing audio messages with SuperGroup


<p>Whatsapp recently launched the communities feature, which lets you organize &#x26; manage multiple groups under one space. There are tons of interesting communities on Whatsapp today, including a super engaged Xoogler community managed by a bunch of ex-google folks.</p>
<p>It's interesting to evaluate what great engagement looks like. Following are stats from 3 communities:</p>
<h3>Community 1</h3>
<p>

  has a healthy reactions to messages ratio of <strong>0.69</strong>.

<h3>Community 2</h3>

  has a reactions to messages ratio of 0.27 indicating that only one in every 3 messages gets a reaction, but a healthy reply ratio of <strong>28%</strong> which means that most queries on the group must be get answered.

<h3>Community 3</h3>

  is the least engaged community with very few reactions &#x26; replies. This is reflective of announcement only groups, or groups with a handful of creators, and most participants are passive. Interestingly SuperGroup can also suggest ways of improving the engagement score for such communities.

What an engaged community looks like


<h2>User attention</h2>
<p>We're all part of many Whatsapp communities &#x26; groups these days where we seek out guidance and help. Have you ever found yourself wondering:</p>
<ul>
  <li>How to get the attention of a group ?</li>
  <li>Whats the best time to post a query, or an announcement ?</li>
  <li>Should you post when theres less activity on the group, in the hopes that you don't get interrupted and more people see your post ?</li>
  <li>Or should you instead post when the group is most active ?</li>
</ul>
<p>Chances are, you might have thought about this on more than one occasion.</p>
<h2>What does the data show ?</h2>
<p>SuperGroup's mission statement is to enable users to get more value out of the community. Since we capture all the messages being sent, we can focus our attention to replies or quoted messages.</p>
<p>One way to visualize this is to plot the number of messages &#x26; time between the original message, and the reply.</p>

  Say post <strong>P2</strong> is a reply to post <strong>P1</strong>. We should look at the number of messages in between, and the time difference in between.

<h3>Data structures</h3>
<p>For every post with a quoted message, lets save this data structure:</p>

<p>We should plot numMessagesDelta and timeDeltaMs. And look at the percentiles (<strong>tp50</strong>, <strong>tp95</strong>, <strong>tp99</strong>) to get a sense of whats happening.</p>
<h4>Number of messages sent between replies</h4>

  The graph shows that majority of the replies have between 1 to 10 other messages exchanged in between the reply and the original message. Some have between 10 and 20 messages. The bulk of the weight is between 0 to 20 messages.

<p>This suggests that posts older than the 20 latest are unlikely to get replies or comments.</p>
<h4>Number of minutes between replies</h4>
<p>

  The graph shows that majority of the replies occur between 0.3 and 25 minutes from the original message. Some replies go upto 50 minutes. Again, its safe to say that the chances of getting a reply after 60 minutes is low.

  Note that this pattern is usual of professional groups. Personal groups tend to be smaller and sometimes more sporadic.
